I Loved You Once

I loved you a long time ago
and now we’ve parted ways.
Did you stay or did I go?
In these long forgotten days.

I knew you wanted me
by the look in your eyes.
I knew you wanted to be free
by the sounds of your sighs.

So I tried calling you
to say an endearing word.
I felt I would be lying, too
if I said it didn’t hurt.

I dream of holding you tight
to hear my heart’s desire.
And dancing in the night
around your elusive fire.

One evening I will say,
“I wonder where she’s gone?”
I’ll dream of you that day
and face another dawn.
