Thursday, November 25, 2004 - Today I was trying to cheer up my son, so I decided to show him the Hatten Baby flash for the hundredth time. Much to my surprise the page that hosted it was gone! Thank goodness for the Internet Archive!
This page is the resurrection of parts of the now defunct URL come.to/hatten (in Sweden) which hosted the Hatten är din flash and the explanation of the lyrics.

Hatten är din - What Does It Mean?
Historical Summary (and Guesswork)
1984, Lebanon - Azar Habib records "Habbeetik" for the wedding of the daughter of one of his friends. It is sung in in Arabic.
1984+, Sweden - A UN office named Nyberg picks up a casette of Habib's music, takes it to Sweden and gives it to his son, Patrik.
1984++, Sweden - Patrik Nyberg and friends, Johan Gröndahl and Pet Bagge, grow up.
1990s, Sweden - An intoxicated Pet Bagge remarks that "Habbeetik" sounds like Habib is singing in Swedish. Certain words in the song sound like references to a popular Swedish drinking game involving a hat.
2000, Sweden - Patrik Nyberg and Johan Gröndahl make a complete phonetic translation of the song into Swedish. They circulate an email containing the lyrics and an MP3 of the song. Everyone loves it.
2000, Sweden - Veckans Hatt made the flash version of the song.
2000, The World - Everyone goes nuts.
2004, Sweden - The site come.to/hatten dies.

I've received numbers of letters, asking me what the *** this site is about. I'll try to give you an explanation, although it's not easy...
A man called Azar Habib, from Lebanon, recorded some songs in the early 80's. As luck would have it, a tape with his songs made its way to Sweden, where I live. One of the songs was "Habbeetik", which is heard in the flash video "Hatten är din". So, Mr Habib is singing in Lebanese, or Arabic. Now, most Swedes don't understand a word of it. So, what to do? Obviously to "translate" the song to Swedish. The printed lyrics in the video are in Swedish, phonetically matching the original singing to a stunning extent, really. Unfortunately it's not possible to maintain that in a translation to English (I can't anyway).
So, what's it about? Well, I have no clue what the original lyrics are about, but the Swedish lyrics are about a hat. It's based on a drinking game, where the person being the most drunk gets to wear the hat. The others then gather round in a circle and, while pointing at the "winner", chant "Hatten är din" which means "the hat is yours".
